The Federal Government has declared its readiness to create new jobs to break extreme poverty in the country.
The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu has disclosed.
Onu spoke at the weekend in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State during a two-week training programme on skills acquisition.
60 participants attended the programme, which was organised for selected indigenes of the state.
He explained that the ongoing various skills acquisition programmes in the country were aimed at providing self-employment to Nigerians.
He promised that government would wholly take the responsibility of providing tools for those trained, to enable them t practice their trades.
The minister, who lamented the growing rate of unemployment in the country, said it was the product of the ugly economy, which it inherited from previous administrations.
He said: “We are at a time where there is massive unemployment in the country, and it is what we inherited. But President Muhammadu Buhari is determined to create new jobs for Nigerians.
“That is why we are providing the skills training programmes in science and technology, so that Nigerians would be employers of labour, rather than struggling to get white collar jobs.”
Onu said the problem of unemployment was compounded by the lack of enough technologists, scientists and artisans in various trades.
He stressed that government was desirous of training the
manpower that would help in the country’s industrialisation programme.
He charged Nigerians to demonstrate their love for the country, by offering their best at any given opportunity to contribute to nation building.
The Managing Director of Science Equipment Development Institute (SEDI), Enugu, Prof Samuel Ndubuisi, said skill acquisition programme was in line with its mandate of developing science, technology and engineering capabilities.
He spoke on behalf of the host agency, the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI).
